NMRC was
established in 1981 by the Irish Government to provide a national resource
to underpin the development
of the electronics sector and Irish
economy. To-date, NMRC has been recognized as one of the most successful
elements of Irelands’ research, technology and innovation (RTI)
support infrastructure and is considered a strategic national asset (Irish
Government Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment 1999 & 2002
reviews).
NMRC now provides
access to state-of-the-art MNT, Information and Communication Technologies
infrastructure to a broad range of Irish
industry and academia. In addition it provides research and educational
opportunities that produce broadly trained scientists and engineers
for Irish and European industry. Most recently, NMRC’s importance in
the National and European MNT landscape was again underlined by the fact
that it has been selected to be the host institute for Irelands National
Nanofabrication Facility with an initial commitment from the Irish Government
of approximately €30million. In 2004 NMRC was merged with other
UCC research activities into the Tyndall National Institute.
